Ioannis Raptakis joined the Diplomatic Service of the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1985.
Served at the Ministry’s HQ, at the Deputy Minister’s office until (1985 – 89), as First Counsellor at the Directorate for the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) and the Council of Europe (1999), as Deputy Head at the Directorate for Justice, Home Affairs & Schengen (2000), as Director for European Integration and Economic and Monetary Policy (2008), as Director for Justice, Home Affairs & Schengen (2009 – 2011) and, currently, as Director for Common Foreign and Security Policy and Political Cooperation of the European Union.
Deputy Head of Mission at the Greek Embassies in Dublin (1993 – 1996) and Buenos Aires (1997 – 1999).
Consul in Perth, Western Australia (1989 – 1993), Consul General in Bucharest (2001 – 2003) and Consul General in Sydney (2004 – 2007).
Ambassador to India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh and Maldives (2012 – 2015).
Director Common Foreign and Security Policy and Political Cooperation of the European Union(2016 – 2017)
Ambassador to Vietnam and Laos (2017).
Chairman of the European Union Working Groups for Visa and Schengen Evaluation (2003).
Leading EU Expert for the Evaluation of the correct application of the EU Acquis on Visas by Portugal and Spain (2003), by Spain (2011) and by Lithuania and Latvia (2012).
Chairman of the EU Expert Group for carrying out targeted Evaluation missions of the Local Consular Cooperation (2004 – 2006).
